WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU COME TO CLASS

At Daichi Isshinryu, we train together, working on self-defense and fitness in a traditional format, all in a positive, family-friendly setting. At the Daichi Dojo we strive to follow and represent tradition in our practices, both common traditions and those specific to Isshinryu. When training, all student wear the all-white karate gi (uniform). Colored belts are worn, with the color indicating a student’s level of experience and accomplishment. A typical class would include the following:

  • Class begins with a bow-in. Students and sensei (teacher) line up and bow to each other as a sign of respect.

  • Training begins with stretching, followed by the “Basics,” drills that include the practice of strikes, blocks and kicks. Each of these movements can be found in the katas and act as the building blocks of the student’s knowledge.

  • Next, students pair off to work on “paired drills.” This builds teamwork, communication, and a chance to see how each of the basics are used in a real application scenario.

  • A new kata-form or self-defense skill often will follow, taught by the Sensei and senior students.

  • Finally, class will have a “Break-Out Session,” in which students train in different skill-level groups, focusing on their specific form.  Every individual works and progresses at their own pace.

Class atmosphere is positive, productive and fun. We emphasize the important concepts of courtesy, respect, discipline, confidence, setting and achieving goals. Whether you are looking to explore martial arts, are drawn to tradition, looking to increase your fitness, or start a new activity with your family, we hope to see you at a class soon.
